Ecology_Society_Economy_diagram_Environment_backgroundSustainable development is the development that ensures the economic needs of human societies without undermining the balance of the ecosystems. It is an organizing principle for life on a planet that has limited resources.Through sustainable development future generations can live on a healthy planet while at the same time enjoy economic growth.

At the 1970’s sustainable development was described as a way of living that would ensure the natural balance and give to all people equal access to water, food and sanitation. The term became widely used in the 1987 report “Our Common Future”. In this report it was mentioned that sustainable development is the “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Sustainable development has been divided into three categories: environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and social sustainability.
